Whittle Family

John Whittle (1818-?)

John was born at Woolcoombe in the tiny parish of Melbury Bubb near Chetnole in Dorset and baptised on 26 July 1818. He was the son of Thomas Whittle, a labourer of Woolcombe Matravers.and Hannah Whittle.

John married Elizabeth Hanham at Cerne Abbas on 20 August 1845. Elizabeth was born at Piddletrenthide in 1823. John and Elizabeth had nine children:

● John Whittle (1856-) – John was baptised 31 October 1856 at Cerne Abbas. He worked at the Dorset County Lunatic Asylum at Charminster near Dorchester. He married Eliza Phillips at Charminster on 30 July 1888.
● Ann Whittle (1857-)
● Sarah Whittle (1859-1860)
● Sarah Whittle (1861-)
● Elizabeth Whittle (1865-)
● William Whittle (1866- )

George Whittle (1848-1935)

George was baptised at Cerne Abbas on 17 September 1848. He was the son of John and Elizabeth Whittle.

George was a labourer and married Mary Louisa Daman (1853-1935) at Piddletrenthide on 4 May 1878. In 1881 George and Mary were living at Coombe Keynes and by 1891 had moved to Sunnyside, West Lulworth. In 1911 the family were living at Redberry Cottage, West Lulworth.

George and Mary had six children:

● Alice Maud Whittle (1881-) – Alice married Ernest Tomkins.
● Annie Elizabeth Whittle (1881-1963) – Annie married Frederick Woodsford. They had two sons Jack William (1903-) and Bertram George Woodsford (1904-1986). Bertram married Violet Ellen ‘Daisy’ Patey (1904-1991) and they had a daughter Gwendoline Mary Woodsford (1929-1943).
● Fanny Louisa Whittle (1885-) – Fanny was baptised at East Lulworth on 21 May 1885.
● William John Thomas Whittle (1887- 1972)
● Bertie Whittle (1888-1915) – Bertie was killed in action in World War I.
● Dorothy Florence Whittle (1898-1990) – Dorothy married Alfred Cecil Baverstock (1902-1885) and they had a son Allan G Baverstock born 1936.

George died on 3 April 1935 aged 87 and Mary died a few months later on 8 June 1935 aged 82. They are buried together at West Lulworth.

William John Thomas Whittle (1887-1972)

William was born at East Lulworth on 6 January 1887. He was the son of George and Mary Louisa Whittle. By 1911 the family were living at Redberry Cottage, West Lulworth. He was known in the village as ‘Jonah’.

William married Ellen Annie Stevens, known as Annie, at the Roman Catholic chapel at East Lulworth on 29 September 1913. Annie was born on 7 September 1877 at Wool to George and Emma ‘Louisa’ Stevens (nee Sinnick).

Starting from the lady on the far left, and going clockwise, we have:
Mary Whittle, William Whittle, Annie Whittle (nee Stevens), George Whittle, Louisa Stevens, Bill Whittle, Fred Woodsford, Bert Whittle, Walter Stevens (RN), Doris Whittle (later Mrs Baverstock) and Alice Stevens.
The car was the first in West Lulworth and is driven by the owner Fred Charles, maybe that is Mrs Charles sitting next to him?

William and Annie had three daughters, all born at No. 20 West Lulworth:

● Ivy Louisa Maud Whittle (1916-2003)
● Agnes Mary Whittle (1918-1989)
● Margaret Eileen Whittle (1921-1990)

Annie died 26 December 1970 aged 85. William died 19 May 1972 aged 85. They were buried together at West Lulworth.

Bertie Whittle (1888-1915)

Bertie was born on 8 October 1888. He was the son of George and Mary Louisa Whittle.

Bert married Beatrice Maud Sampson at Coombe Keynes on 24 April 1915. The month before, Beatrice had given birth to their son William Bertie Whittle.

Less than four months after the wedding Lance Corporal Bertie Whittle of the 5th Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment, was killed in action on the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey on 21 August 1915. His name appears on the War Memorial in West Lulworth as well as on the Helles Memorial.

On 19 June 1920, Bertie’s widow Beatrice married another Bertie – Bertie Thomas John Spicer. They had two children, Doris and Eddie. Beatrice died in November 1934.

WHITTLE. – In constant memory of our dear Son and Brother, Bertie Whittle, reported missing at Gallipoli August 21st, 1915 (later presumed killed).Never forgotten by his loving Parents, Brother and Sisters. “As fresh in our memories today as the day he left us.”

WHITTLE. – Treasured memories of our dear Brother, Bertie Whittle, West Lulworth (and beloved son of the late Mr. & Mrs. G. Whittle), reported “missing” August 21st, 1915, at Suvla Bay, Dardanelles, with 5th Dorsets. “God’s greatest gift, Remembrance.”

Ivy Louisa Maud Whittle (1916-2003)

Ivy was born on 11 July 1916 at No. 20 West Lulworth.

Ivy married Gerald Charles Martin (1916-1992) at East Lulworth Roman Catholic Chapel in 1936. Gerald was born on 11 March 1916 to Alma Victor Martin (a postman at Weymouth) and Edith Ellen Balson (from Whiteway). Gerald’s father Alma was killed in the First World war at Anre, France on 18 November 1916. Gerald’s mother Edith died of consumption in August 1927, and Gerald was brought up by his mother’s sister at Hollow Ditch Farm, Creech.

Gerald and Ivy had two sons:

● Roy Victor Martin (living)
● Eric Peter Martin (living)

Gerald died in 1992 and Ivy died in 2003. They are buried together at West Lulworth.

Agnes Mary Whittle (1918-1989)

Agnes was born 26 April 1918 at No. 20 West Lulworth.

Agnes married Horace Sidney Morgan (1911-1996) at the Roman Catholic chapel at East Lulworth in 1935. Horace was born 31 July 1911 at Amesbury in Wiltshire. Horace and Agnes had three children:

● Gillian A Morgan (living)
● David J Morgan (living)
● Diana Morgan (living)

After the war, Horace and Agnes lived near Reading in Berkshire and in later years they moved to Finchingfield in Essex. Agnes died on 14 March 1989 at Finchingfield and Horace died there in 1996. They are buried together at West Lulworth.

Margaret Eileen ‘Daisy’ Whittle (1921-1990)

Margaret was born on 8 March 1921 at No. 20 West Lulworth and was known as ‘Daisy’.

Daisy married Wilfred George Hawkins (1918-1989) at the Roman Catholic chapel at East Lulworth on 9 August 1941. Wilfred was born on 1 April 1918.

Wilfred and Margaret had one son:

● Roger G Hawkins (living)

Wilfred died in 1989 and Daisy died in 1990. They are buried together at West Lulworth.
