I am back to my GG Grandfather Lawrence born about 1810 and died 1859

married to Rebecca ?...

There is also a record of a Joseph Dorey who had a fishing room in Twillingate District in 1806...no other info(Black Island is in Twillingate District)...Lawrence named his 1st son Joseph so this may be Lawrence's father but not sure.

Lawrence & Rebecca's children are: Joseph, Rebecca, Jane, William, Eliza, Henry, Elizabeth & Louisa.

Lawrence had siblings:

John, Elizabeth, Jane, Dianna & Eve (Eva)

Lived on Black Island, Notre Dame Bay, Newfoundland

Enjoyed searching the website. Found my grandfather John (born 1863) and grandmother Amelia (born 1869) there, also my father William who was 17 years old at the time of the 1911 census.

As a boy my holidays from Bournemouth were always spent in Lulworth and grandad, the local fisherman, would take me out at the crack of dawn to empty the lobster pots. Other times, he would take me out into the fields shooting rabbits.

I have many happy memories of Lulworth.

great site! I am researching the Parmiter family in Dorset. Our ancestors lived in St Andrews Farm and Burngate Farm in the early 1800's, being tenant farmers of the Weld family. I am visiting the are in May to carry out further research and to look round. Ironically as a child I holidayed in Lulworth without knowing that it was home to our ancestors. Living at the other end of the country these days it is marvellous to have such amazing FREE sites for the Dorset area. Keep up the good work!

My family moved to the village in 1932. We first lived at No.19 opposite the war memorial. Later we moved to No.4 Sunnyside Terrace and eventually to Lulcote.

I was in Lulworth last year (2009) and noticed that Lulcote still retains its name.I was four years old when we first arrived in Lulworth and my sister Mary was 3. My brother Michael and my sisters Erica and Christine were both born in the village and so were considered to be 'villagers'.

Lulworth must be the most wondrous place in all the world for a young child with imagination and also blessed with good health.

My boyhood friends were John and Gerald Hawkins, Brian O'Hare and Donald O'Hare among many others.

I remember that the Meaden family who lived on the road to the village school had a marvellous fig tree and anyone was welcome to pick some.

The village baker would deliver the hot bread to your front door. On Good Friday the buns would be hot. I have never in all of my years ever seen or tasted the cottage loaves made in the bakery at Lulworth.

At Sunnyside we lived next door to the Miller family who were all fishermen.

Occasionally Mr Miller would drop off a lobster or large crab for the family. David and Jim were her sons and Jessie her daughter. All lovely people.

Whenever, I visited from Canada I would drop in at the coast guard cottages to see Jim. He was always very welcoming.

Dulcie Miller and her brother lived at Rose Cottage or near it.

Once 3 steamers came into the cove on the same day. I do not believe that it had ever happened before or since. One was the Empress from Weymouth and the Vicoria from Bournemouth. I do not remember the name of the other one.

On Guy Fawkes night there was always a huge fire on Hambury and people spent weeks preparing it.

I hope that all of the people privileged to live in the village and the remainder of my relatives enjoy their lives as much as I did.

Mark Brooker [message 35]. I'm so sorry to hear that Miss Tippett has died. I'm sorry for your loss. I had the privilege about 9 years ago to collect her from her home in Dorchester and bring her back here. She had a good look round and then we had afternoon tea together whilst she reminisced about her time as matron here. She had numerous photographs and told me about how she adopted you.

Over the years quite a few of children have called in to reconnect with this house and all of them [despite some very harrowing personal stories] spoke very fondly of their time here and with particular adoration of Miss Tippett. She was deeply loved and respected in the village and I believe had a nack of getting exactly what all the children needed. She told me that the Borstal boys from Portland came and built the kitchen and a Wendy house in the front yard.

I would love you to call in when you are ready but it might be better for you in the Autumn when the holiday makers are gone and the rooms empty.

Have just seen the message from Sarah Jackson of the Old Barn, West Lulworth and more recently a message from Kenneth Coppard who was also resident at the home but some time before me. I was a resident of the childrens home from 1966, when I arrived aged 18 months - 1978 when it closed. I was one of the last children there and Eva Tippett, who ran the home from sometime in the early 50's until it closed, adopted me and we moved to a cottage in Osmington on her retirement. Very sadly, Eva passed away peacefully only a couple of weeks ago at a nursing home in Dorchester, aged 96. Due to her passing I have made contact with another of the boys who also lived there and he told me that he had been to Lulworth a few years ago and knocked on the door of the Old Barn and had very kindly been invited in for a tour.

I have often wanted to do that myself as I visit Lulworth regularly, but I have never plucked up the courage. As I have not been inside since it closed in '78 I would very much like the opportunity to revisit so I hope you do not mind me knocking on the door one day soon.

I have very fond memories of my childhood at the home and feel very privileged to have grown up in such a beautiful house in a wonderful part of the country.

I was a resident of The Old Barn in the childrens home at about 1948/49. Miss Candler was the matron and Miss Langley was the owner of the building - I think she had her own part of the building. We went to the school in the village and Miss Maltbery was the head mistress. When we were too big for the village school we used to have a bus every morning to take us to Bovington Camp school in some barrack rooms dotted about the camp and away from the main school building. We had eight children in the home - four boys in one bedroom and the girls in another room. We had one bedroom for any child that was ill and had to be kept away from all the others. The coal yard was just next door and coal was delivered by horse drawn wagon. I used to go and help on the farm of Mr May and out on the fishing boat of Jim the fisherman. Mrs Mayhew used to run one of the hotels down by the car park and restaurant that got burnt down one year. We were looked after very well and the wealthy villagers used to invite the children to a party in their homes every Christmas. I was in the choir and carried the cross on Sundays at the church. A Mr Chambers was the vicar and we had a Mr Stewart Hibbert on a radio service one year. Miss Langley had a holiday bungalow on the Durdle Door site and when they had to remove them she put hers in the grounds of The Old Barn. I spent some happy time at Lulworth Cove and with the people there.

Having been asked by my wife to do some research on her Meaden grandparents I was fascinated to learn of the bigamist marriage of Grace Meaden b 1813. I should also tell you that her parents John (1791) and Grace (1791) did not have seven but eight children. My wife's gt gt gt grandfather was William b 1819 and his parents are given as John and Grace. My wife's grandfather was Frank Meaden b 1885 in Audenshaw near Manchester who in turn was the son of Edward Francis Meaden b 1849 in West Lulworth and Edward's father was William b 1819. We would be pleased to hear from anybody with connections to the family.

At the back of the book is written 'Aunt Lizzie Charles killed at East Lulworth Sept 26 1932 Buried at West Lulworth Oct 2nd 1932. I have not been able to find out about Aunt Lizzie and how she died. As far as I am aware William Birkinshaw (head gardener at Bridehead)was my great grandfather. My grandfather was Frank Birkinshaw, my mother was Olive Birkinshaw (born in 1925). I was told by my mother, that her father Frank Birkinshaw qualified in horticulture at Kew Gardens. He was given the opportunity to train at Kew Gardens, only because of an arrangement with the Williams family, the owners of Bridehead. I believe that Frank then worked in Malaya, he was involved in growing rubber trees and various other plants. He was interned by the Japanese during the second world war, but later returned to Southampton, and then Bournemouth after the war. My mother Olive lived in Southampton, but along with her mother and two sisters Cleo and Iris, they were evacuated to Bournemouth. (She also had a brother called David). My mother Olive died two years ago, so some of my information is a bit sketchy.

Looking = I have recently started to look at the ancestry of my maternal grandfather. His father, my great-grandfather, was William Birkinshaw who was the head gardener for the Williams family for nearly 50 years.

I read with interest, that Robert Orchard Williams married one of his daughters - Agnes Annie Birkinshaw.

I visited Littlebredy this last weekend (8th March 2014) and found the grave of William Birkinshaw along the wall at the rear of the church.

I do have some information on him, which I would love to share with anyone who is interested, and likewise, if anyone else has any information on him, then I would love to hear about that also.

Looking for family connections/links to my maternal Grandmother Constance Williams born in Spring Cottage.

I have been fortunate to make connections with distant cousin Victoria Thorpe who has been able to supply information on links with the Williams family but Constance has a brother Brooke and sister Madeleine who we would like to find out more about and have come up against a brick wall.

We have been fortunate to make links with Joan Williams daughter of Arthur Williams who was Granny Constance's brother.

We would also like to find links to Jane and Poppy Loader who we believe took in ?adopted/fostered) my Aunty Daisy (Marguerite) who we know was by birth a Hannah but took the surname for some reason of Blake, there is some mystery surrounding her birth and early life.

Aunty Daisy married Tom also Constance's brother and who lived in Cove Cottage and run the Lulworth Garage and taxi service up until the 1950's.

I have traced our Vey family back to descendants living in and around Dorset - West Lulworth and Corfe Castle. I seem to at an impasse now, but I will keep checking your fantastic site.

The Veys
William Vey 11 Oct 1696 married Agnes Sergeant (1694 Winfrith) 1718 Corfe Castle, but unable to track down William's father.

William died 1723 and Agnes married William Samways in 1724.
It has been such a fantastic journey, especially confirming that Henry Vey, grandson of William Vey (1696) married Virtue Vey (1758 - 1822) dau of (John and Edith Senneck) and both of West Lulworth married at Corfe Castle in 1780.

Thank you so much for such an interesting site. As a result of contacting the site I have now found the RN career I had been searching for. I have been researching the Bagg family, in particular, Charles Emmanuel and his children, in particular Arthur Charles Bagg and his career in the RN. His daughter Gwendolin M. Bagg married an army service man called Edwin Pole from Nottingham in 1943. BUT in the interim of her husband serving in Italy Gwendolin had a child by a Canadian Trooper based at Bovington and it is this gentleman that I am trying to find for Gwendolin's son, who remembers holidaying at Sunnyside Villa when a young boy. Have now tried DNA in an effort to find the "lost" father. Ever optimistic! Again thank you for the information on your site and I'm sure I will be coming back to it again.
